may day

And lo, already it is May. The fifth month. ‘Tis the month my accent is mocked the most. Australians love to deride the way Kiwis say “six”, but in my years (years!) here I have discovered that one word is completely incomprehensible to them, and that word is “fifth”. As I will not pronounce it “feefth”, as is standard, I am reduced to trying to work my way around it.
Case in point -
Co-worker: What’s the date of the next meeting?
Jac: Um – fourth of the fifth at 10am.
Co-worker: The hell?
Jac [remembering]: Fourth of May. 10am.
Co-worker: Oh, the FEEFTH! Ahahahahah! You said FUFTH! Ahahahaha! … ha! Hahaha! [continue until distracted by shiny object]

I love May.

"Make a remark," said the Red Queen: "Its ridiculous to leave all conversation to the pudding!"
